Women and Youth Movement (WOYOMO)

Women and Youth Movement (WOYOMO) is a feminist grassroots organization based in Tanzania, working in rural and marginalized communities to advance gender equality and educational justice. We empower adolescent girls, teen mothers, survivors of gender-based violence, and young women through education, safe spaces, economic opportunities, and psychosocial support. By combining community engagement, advocacy, and partnerships, WOYOMO creates pathways for girls and young women to stay in school, build confidence, achieve financial independence, and thrive as leaders and change-makers.

Testimonials and stories of change

“Breaking the Silence: A Male Voice for Menstrual Health”

Serving as a male peer educator on Woyomo’s Health Spark project has been a deeply eye-opening experience. I engaged in conversations around menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, and body autonomy—topics often considered taboo among men in my community.

Facilitating sessions with both boys and girls helped me understand the importance of creating safe, stigma-free spaces for adolescents to learn and share. I watched boys begin to ask questions they’d long been afraid to voice, and I saw girls gain confidence in speaking about their bodies and rights.

Personally, this journey shifted my perspective. Hearing other boys express their thoughts and confusions made me realize how essential it is for men to be part of these conversations. It became clear that to challenge harmful norms and create lasting change, we need more male allies actively involved in this work. This experience strengthened my communication and leadership skills and deepened my commitment to gender equality. I now move forward with a stronger voice and purpose, ready to keep breaking taboos and shaping a generation that values dignity, respect, and inclusion for all. Lewis Kagande

What’s next for your organization? / Your future plans

As we look ahead, WOYOMO is committed to deepening our impact in rural and marginalized communities by building on the progress we have made with girls and young women. Our next step is to launch Handmade Hope Tanzania, a social enterprise designed to empower young mothers. Through this initiative, young mothers will be trained in handcraft and entrepreneurship skills, enabling them to earn sustainable incomes, support their families, and gain a second chance at pursuing their dreams. This enterprise will not only create pathways for financial independence but also help break cycles of poverty and vulnerability that often hold them back.

In addition, we plan to expand our Girls’ Center in rural areas to reach more girls with safe spaces for learning, healing, and growth. At the center, girls will access mentorship, mental health support, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education and resources that are scarce but critical in their communities. By offering these services, we aim to equip girls with the knowledge, confidence, and resilience they need to make informed choices and thrive despite the challenges they face.

Your current needs to continue with the work

At this stage, our most pressing needs are funding and resources to establish and expand our Girls’ Center in rural areas, ensuring that more girls can access safe spaces, mentorship, mental health support, and sexual and reproductive health education.
