With support from the grant, Girl up Umoja piloted its first cohort of the Empower Dada Initiative, an initiative focusing on equipping vulnerable young mothers with tailoring skills, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) knowledge, and financial literacy. In this first cohort 8 young mothers aged 24 and below completed the program, gaining practical tailoring skills and producing commercial garments by the end of the training. Participants also gained access to shared sewing machines and materials to support their business start-ups, alongside improved understanding of reproductive health and increased self-confidence. Despite challenges such as limited equipment, childcare responsibilities, and social opposition, the initiative demonstrated strong impact in promoting economic independence and personal growth among the participants. The pilot was a success and has layed the groundwork for future cohorts, with the initiative aiming to expand equipment access, provide childcare support for participants, and deepen community engagement.
